First night in the RV and we all slept well, until daylight when the skylight/roof vents light up the bed room at 6am. We’ve got to find a solution. Winnebago provided a continental breakfast for the group of 75 folks picking up the RVs for the trip. Our orientation was last, at 11:20, so we got a late start, but it gave me time to read the instruction manual and try to figure out how some of the things work. Finally, we sat thru the movie and got our keys. Our RV, a 32 footer, has 8 miles on it. We’re off. We headed straight north to I90, then headed west. We’re splitting up the driving with each of us driving for about 2 hours at a time. Nothing eventful on this portion of the trip, just farm land and flat. Learning to drive an RV is interesting-we really have to watch where the sides of the RV are and remember we have a long tail that swings out in turns. Driving in the wind is also a challenge, and I90 in Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota does have wind. We stopped in Mitchell, SD at a super Walmart to stock up on supplies, have dinner and gas up. The first gas bill was $115 for the first 252 miles. Hopefully, the mileage will get better. Since we got out late, we drove late. We finally got to our campground, the Oasis Campground in Chamberlain, SD at 9:45. We really don’t want to drive after dark again. We saw our first deer tonight; it ran across the interstate about 20 feet in front of us while we were doing 60 mph. If the deer had been a second slower it wouldn’t have been good for us or the deer. Total mileage today was 323 and we’re all still talking to each other.
